Here on this episode the gang and I take look at the 2013 body horror film titled 'Contracted' which made our top ten list in our 54 best horror films of last year. But now it is time to take a closer look. Is it as good as we thought it was or does it fall apart upon closer inspection?

Surviving The Facade

Hello I am Reeler but for today's article you may call me...Gonzalo. I have a strange tale to share you one that is sure to leave you confused and missing a number of brain cells by the end of it. It takes place in a small apartment in the realm of drama and angst called Façade.
It began with my arrival at a plain white door at the end of a gray hall way. On the other side I could hear voices. No doubt it was the "lovely" couple. Trip and Grace on the surface appeared to be your typical happy husband and wife. However both of these individuals suffered from a common condition among many video game characters known as Artificial Stupidity Syndrome or ASS. This mental condition makes one unable to comprehend any words or sentences above that of a grade schooler which can often cause them to suddenly change topics or going off on psychotic rants. I knew that I was about walking into a hornets nest all I had to do was not stir the swarm inside.
I knocked on the door and within seconds the Husband Trip greeted me with a wide dopey smile which I responded with the all caps phrase of: "LETS PARTY!". Trip responded to this better than I thought he would and invited me in before asking to wait while he fetched Grace from the kitchen.
Grace came out and I gave her a hug and a compliment. Not wanting Trip to get the wrong idea I gave a Trip a compliment as well but that backfired when Trip got the impression that I was flirting with him. Oh well what ever I wasn't going to dwell on that little misunderstanding. The only thing that mattered now was getting through this night in one piece.
Trip being the gracious host that he was offered me a drink from his bar and while I wanted a beer my request fell on deaf ears since beer some how translated to a Cosmopolitan. All the while Trip was at the bar putting together that fancy pants drink I could hear my stomach call out for a Sam Adams and when I heard that my real stomach said the same thing. I almost wept understanding my organ's plight and all I could do was tell it to hang in there.
As I sip the purple pixels from the glass Trip reminded me that I had apparently had introduced them years ago in college or something like that and they thanked me for all the years of pain, agony, and (with some sarcasm) love. Those words felt like a warning sign to me especially the rather ominous music cue that came with them causing me to move away slightly as they stared at me like a pair of mannequins.
Thankfully(and mercifully) the silence was broken when Trip asked me to take look at a photo from their last trip to Italy while Grace tried to usher me to the couch. It seemed that the two of them were fighting for my attention. I guess I wouldn't blame them I mean who could resist the charms of a character named Gonzalo?
Unfortunately it soon became apparent that Trip's ASS was about to go off and his wife was not far behind. I sat on the couch nervously sipping my wine watching the train wreck that was their marriage. Back and forth the two went accusing one another of being cold or not supportive and soon Grace's ASS was in full throttle. Once in awhile one of them would turn their attention to me to start asking me some questions hoping that I would take their side in the manner. I knew better than to align myself with either of the crazy bastards and held my tongue tight.
I retreated to the kitchen to contemplate my next move. It wasn't long before Trip noticed my absence and called be begging me to come back and help them. I did but once I was within sight I blurted out(or should I say typed) "D&D and Pizza!" in hopes that it would either changed the subject or lighten the mood a little. It didn't. In fact things escalated quickly when Grace took my words completely out of context and thought I was acting condescending towards her. I tried to defend myself but her ASS was completely out of control. Nothing I could say seemed to change the mind set of either of them.
At this point I gave up and sat there as I rode out the storm which came to its dramatic yet bizarre end when somehow every bullshit thing I had said throughout all this fighting somehow opened Grace's eyes that their marriage wasn't going to work out and even thanked me for it! As Trip begged his wife(or I should say ex-wife) not to leave I used this opportunity to snag one of the bottles of wine from the bar and ran out the door just as Grace opened and raced to the elevator to freedom.
Even after my escape I am still haunted by my experiences and every time I look back all I can remember is the horror...the horror...the horror...the horror...

In Summary: Façade is an interesting little game that is definitely ambitious if obviously flawed but one can find some entertainment if they don't want to try and "beat" the game. I certainty know I did. Sure it can be a little annoying with how brain dead the AI are but I see it as a game that falls into "Its So Bad Its Good" Category.

Exploring the Internet(to me at least)  is like opening random treasure chests. Sometimes you'll finding something cool, sometimes you'll find something bad or worse shit, and other times you'll come across a rare gem. DreamKeepers is one example of a bright rare gem. An independent graphic novel series produced David and Liz Lillie which tells the epic tale of a dream world besieged by an ancient evil and yes it starts anthropomorphic creatures.

At first I was going to avoid it since my past experiences with anything involving furries in it have been less than appealing. But my curiosity finally got the best of me and I decided to read the first volume and give it a chance. I have to say that by the end of it I was quite impressed by what I saw. Soon after I jumped into the second one and now I'm completely hooked.

There are a lot of good things to say about DreamKeepers the most obvious been the art. These novels are simply gorgeous with excellent detail and vibrant colors on every page. You can tell that the creators are very talented able to create images that are beautiful, humorous, and at times terrifying.

But a comic cant stand on its own just by looking pretty so how is the writing? Good actually I have yet to find a piece of dialogue or a description that felt cliché or forced. Not only that but everyone thus this far has been really thought out down to the last detail creating a unique world filled with a lot of history that one can actually read on the main site explaining how certain events affected what is currently happening in the main storyline. This also includes some of  technology and a map of the world itself(Well the main city actually but still). After two volumes I have no idea what direction David and Liz are going with this and that's a good thing too because you don't want your story to be easy to predict.

The characters are a lot of fun and unique from the mischievous orphan Mace and his little pal Whip to the brainy yet determined Lilith to the awesome and very snarky Namah who had quickly become a fan favorite and after you spend some time with her you'll figure out pretty quickly why.

Dreamkeepers is a whole mix of different genres: Fantasy, adventure, mystery, romance, drama, science-fiction, horror, and a bit of steam punk as well. Despite how cute everything looks I should warn you that this is NOT something for kids as this series can get dark. An example? The whole things kicks off with a nasty virgin sacrifice(No I'm not joking). This is a series that makes it clear(as do the authors) that no one is safe and that if someone dies they stay dead. There is also another reason why this isn't suitable for kids but I'll get to that in a moment.

So DreamKeepers seems pretty cool so far having great art, solid writing, and is both exciting and funny but there are few beefs that I have with it and they are as followed below.

1) Fanservice: Yep there is TNA in this and not of the human variety either. Its not on every page and is in no way a key element in this series but when its there it can get weird. Just a fair warning if the character Tinsel appears in any chapter then expect some boobage....

2) Bast: There is almost always at least one character that gets on the reader's nerves and for me its this butthole. He is suppose to be the quite brooding member of the main cast who has a dark and tragic past but to me that just screams EMO!!! While its true that this character type can be interesting if written well enough other times I find myself rolling my eyes. It doesn't help that the other characters are so much more interesting. Oh well I guess every party needs a pooper.

Those are my only complaints so far and maybe its just due to taste and really just nitpicks plus I have yet to read volume 3 and volume 4 has yet to be released so we'll see.

Overall DreamKeepers is a solid graphic novel series that I really hope get more attention and if you can get past the fact that its filled with furries and the odd moments of fanservice then I think you'll really enjoy it. Both volumes 1 and 2 are free to read on the main site and as soon 4 comes out so will volume 3.

Here is the link to the mainsite

Also definitely take a look a the prequel comics that follow the main characters before the main events. They don't have much in the way of clues or hints when it comes down to the plot but it gives you a lot of insight into who the characters are.

And so ends another review. Thank you for reading and feels free to share your opinions on the topic in the comments section below the article. Also stay tuned for future articles and episodes of the Dark Discussions Podcast here on A Reeler Movie Reviewer.
